Case Study #1
Ms Smith is in her mid 50’s, and was out cycling with her husband, when she was struck by a car that failed to stop. She sustained skull fractures, subdural haematoma with midline shift, L3 #, T7-11 #’s. She lives in a very rural location, with 3 grown up children who live away.
Unfortunately, the relationship broke down, and Mr Smith left the marital home around month 3, although on amicable terms. We were concerned of the impact losing a primary carer would have on wellbeing and participation, however, Ms Smith developed good coping strategies with support from the OT and psychotherapist, and in-fact thrived in absence of her husband.
Pre-accident, Ms Smith was fit and active, she managed several local businesses with her husband and enjoyed long cycling excursions in the surrounding countryside.
Ms Smith required surgery to insert rods into her spine, which she made a good recovery from, but has resulting back pain which impacts on sleep.
Ms Smith initially had significant cognitive issues, so poor memory and concentration, but as her pain improved and over time, her cognitive abilities improved.
Ms Smith lives in a rural location with reduced access to services and facilities. She relies on taxis to access appointments and the community, as she is not permitted to drive for one year post brain-injury, however, taxis are expensive due to the longer journeys.
